I was a student when I did this work, but I am now a postdoc or research faculty member. Can I still participate?

No. To be eligible, at least one paper author must be a student enrolled at a university in Canada, Mexico, or the United States as of November 1, 2026. The Applied Research Competition is limited to current students.

I recently graduated and was the only student author. Can I still submit?

No. You must have student status as of November 1, 2026. Recent graduates who are no longer students are not eligible when they are the only student author.

I recently completed my PhD and am now a postdoc. I was the only student author on the paper. Can I submit?

No. The same eligibility requirement applies: you must be a student as of November 1, 2026. Postdoctoral researchers who are no longer students are not eligible when they are the only student author.

Can I submit a paper accepted to IMC 2026 or CCS 2026 if the camera-ready version is already available?

No. Eligible papers must be published or camera-ready between September 1, 2025 and July 31, 2026. IMC 2026 and CCS 2026 papers should be submitted to next year's competition.

We also want the Applied Research Competition presentation to take place after the paper has been presented at its primary publication venue. For this reason, please submit IMC 2025 and CCS 2025 papers, rather than IMC 2026 or CCS 2026 papers.

I am a student based outside North America. Am I eligible?

You are eligible only if, as of November 1, 2026, you are enrolled as a student at a university in Canada, Mexico, or the United States.

When should I submit?

Submit your paper by Friday, September 25, 2026, Anytime on Earth (AoE). No deadline extensions will be granted.

Where do I submit my paper?

Please submit using the submission form listed above in the Submission & Review section.

When will I hear about the results?

All authors will receive a decision by October 13, 2026. Selected presenters will be contacted before October 14 to confirm transportation and accommodation arrangements.

I am based in Canada or Mexico but have visa issues traveling to the United States. Can I present virtually?

No. This is an in-person event, and virtual presentations are not permitted. Selected student presenters must be able to present in person before the panel of industry judges and academics at NYU Brooklyn on November 13, 2026. If you cannot attend, we will offer the opportunity to another eligible submission.

I have multiple eligible papers. Can I submit more than one?

Yes. You may submit multiple eligible papers.

My paper has multiple student authors. Can each student author submit the same paper separately?

No. Each paper may have only one student author submit and present on its behalf. If selected, the competition will invite one student presenter per paper.
